Dragon Warrior (NES 1989) Game Genie Codes

aka Dragon Quest (ドラゴンクエスト)

We posted these Game Genie codes for Dragon Warrior way back in 2005. So I'm reposting them. I'm a little over halfway through the game. Even with the codes it takes forever. I can't even believe how many hours I must have put into this game when I was a kid.

AEVGUIZA - No damage in swamp
VVOYYTSA - Start with 256 gold coins
VKOIVLSA - Spells use only one magic point
YAKKEVYA - Barriers cause half damage

Commando (NES 1986) Game Genie Codes

Right around the time Schwarzenegger's film Commando was released, Capcom came out with Commando (aka 戦場の狼, Senjō no Ōkami in Japan). The movie and the game were unrelated, though I'm sure the game got some good sales in America due to the release of the movie. Apparently it was released on a wide variety of platforms, but this month is NES month and we're talking about the NES game. You know how these vertical-scrolling shooters go. You're gonna need a lot of practice and a lot of patience. Or you could just use these Game Genie codes:

EZEGNOVG - Start with infinite lives
XVULASXK - Start with infinite grenades
AEKKIILA - Both players start with 1 life
TEKKIILA - Both players start with 6 lives
PEKKIILE - Both players start with 9 lives

Metroid (NES 1986) Maps

Metroid has been consistently popular on AM. And the one thing people can't get enough of is Metroid maps. So I looked up The Video Game Atlas and found a couple nifty maps rendered from screenshots of the game. You can see the small version of it above, but I doubt that helps much except for reference. The maps are huge files, so we're not hosting them on our server. But you can find both versions of the Metroid maps at The Video Game Atlas. We'll be saving them, just in case their site goes down like so many other video game map websites do.

Also check out this older map we posted back in 2005

And since we're on the topic of Metroid:

Guide to NES Emulation

Guide to NES Emulation
Posted by Master Blasphemy

To get the ball rolling so late in the game this Nintendo Month, I've transcribed some accumulated knowledge and links regarding NES emulation into this handy guide. For emulation beginners, this will get you set to play your favorite NES games from the comfort of your personal computer. For pros, you guys already know what to do, but maybe one or two of these links might come in handy.

Emulators
If you want to emulate NES 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System games, first you're going to need an emulator to play them. Emulators are wonderful pieces of software reverse engineered from the original consoles.

Our favorite NES emulator is easily FCE Ultra. It's open-source, works on a variety of platforms, and provides us with great results. - http://fceultra.sourceforge.net/

If you're looking for something more specialized, check out Wikipedia's list of Nintendo Entertainment System emulators

ROMs
Now you've got your emulator up and you want to load up a game. Now you need to get some games. I don't pretend to know anything about the subject, but a couple quick Google searches found several links to NES ROM torrents:

- 3539 NES-ROMS and Emulator (mininova)
- All NES Roms zip (mininova)
- 8816 NES - roms [7z] (mininova)
- NES rom complete set (isohunt)

My understanding is that laws regarding ROMs and emulators are grey and murky. But from what I read on Wikipedia and other places, the only consequences have been threats of legal action against sites hosting ROMs. The average ROM downloader does so with relative safety, though at their own risk. Just don't try to host them on your server or sell them to people.

Just download some ROMs, point the emulator to the files, and load them up. Most emulators will take Game Genie codes, and most will let you take cool screenshots. Some, like FCE Ultra, let you hook up control pads or joysticks to your emulator. We might recommend a USB NES port.

If anyone else has any more links related to NES emulators or ROMs, leave us some comments.

Rampage (NES 1988) Game Genie Codes

Sooner or later every NES gamer decides to conquer Rampage. And why not? You have infinite continues, and it shouldn't take that long to destroy America, should it? It does... Believe me, it turns into an endurance race. I think I've attempted it 5 times, sometimes with help, sometimes by myself. I only managed to do it once. And I took two separate pizza breaks during that session. I can't even remember what the end of the game looks like. I guess it's time to make a 6th attempt. This time though, I'm going to use some Game Genie Codes to make it interesting.
